cornfu > day 364: "super, man!". DAY 364... THREE SIXTY FOUR! i am a day away from a year of photos and i am feeling super! this project started off as a month of photos and i decided to make it a full year. i am in shock that i actually stuck to this! part of it is the feedback from fellow smugmuggers that kept me amp'd and going. thx, gang!
cornfu > day 342: no rhyme or reason for this shot other than the priceless expression on my wife and kids' faces as i mashed mud all over my face. "you do some strange stuff" said the wife! i set up an off camera flash on a stand and bounced it off an umbrella about 2 feet away. i closed down the aperture to cut out the background. i made this a quick one since the mud was starting to set up.
cornfu > day 341: "intense focus". i have 24 more photos to take before i hit 1 year of daily photos. i never thought i could pull it off. but thanks to kind comments, patient family members and the great people that make up smugmug i was inspired to keep rolling! thx!
cornfu > day 306: "ill in the chill". tried to get a clever snow shot tonight but the cold wreaked havoc on my batteries and remote triggers. finally my canon batteries deep-6'd. this was the best of my blurred, off balanced work. my original intent was to pull off a night, zombie hunter type pose with a shovel and push an air of eeriness with the setting/lighting. but it looks more like "red neck burying cat at night in snow". the funny part was watching folks who were driving by pause with their high beams aimed at the dork running through snow with a shovel and a remote trigger.
cornfu > day 298: "light". was wondering what to photo this evening and saw a few things that inspired me to go with the blurred/blown out look. i saw an alt rock video of members on a white set as well as the opening credits for a LAME 2008 movie (blindness) that had a great look. i am not sure if this technique has an official name but i like the look. for the setup i bounced a flash out of an umbrella low to the ground pointing up. the flash was slightly behind the subject. i had 2 of my kids hold up a white sheet behind the subject and threw another sheet on the ground. i intentionally unfocussed the shot to kill the edges even more.
cornfu > day 273: "lazy". tired of taking close up shots and all my volunteers are in bed so it is me, an off-camera flash/umbrella and a remote trigger. the original photo is not blown out. used a lightroom preset called "x=city+scapes".
cornfu > day 232: "the middles". my oldest son was off practicing his guitar and my youngest daughter was chasing the cat so the middle kids got snagged for a few shots using two off camera flashes. i remote triggered my canon 580 (behind and to the left) through a cheap chinese soup container which triggered an optical sensor attached to a nikon sb 24 with and umbrella to the right. the kids are always good sports when i "volunteer" them for an impromptu shoot.
cornfu > day 215: stand-in warrior. i couldn't convince my wife to be a model for tonight's daily photo. so i asked my son to strike a "wolverine-esk" pose. yes, i know wolverine has retractable claws and not Sai but this is the best i could come up with shy of building real claws. we shot quite a few photos despite the mosquitoes and me kicking patio chairs barefoot in the dark. most were too blown out or too dark due to me still not having a clue about lighting! it was fun nonetheless!
cornfu > day 209: "help me! help me! help me!". there is a nasty spider that has taken up real estate outside of our back kitchen window. i figured a cool shot would be a slight knock off of the movie "the fly". i cut out a little paper man (easier to identify thank a little paper fly-man like in the movie) and popped him into the web. the spider shot down and started to kick out paper man. it was pure creepiness to watch. i had to repeat this several times to get the shot i wanted. finally the spider gave up and shot back up the web. i went ghetto with the lighting with a cheap home depot light hung out of my back kitchen window to light the spider so my macro could actually focus. then i shot a flash through an umbrella at half power at 35mm. i had a lot of fun doing this one but now i swear i feel spiders skittering across me.
