day 113: "film noir" - the rain hit fast and furious and gave up some distant thunder. during a normal thunderstorm our part of the neighborhood loses power 80% of the time so i figured i better snag my photo, upload and be done with it. i would hate to miss my shot a day due to renegade voltage. today's shot is a bit more obscure than my normal shots but i kind of dig how it has that old movie classic feel like "Out of the Past" (1947). it would have been better if i could have staged a reflection of someone off of the wet pavement. it's getting late and i am lazy.
day 112: "liar liar". i vowed to not take photos of flowers for my daily. but chuck in a squirrel skull and a cute ladybug and i am IN! and, NO, i didn't make a squirrel go deep six and skullify it for the shot. the skull was a found item.

note: as i was setting up for the shot (flopping animal skull into flowers) there was a baby bunny bunkered down in the flowers. the bunny went jetting out mid-shoot. had to check my shorts after that!

this was not my best composition but i liked the sharpness of the bug and skull. the macro cranks the DOF. i am going to post some alternate shots in the misc. gallery.
day 111: "penn bowl - after rolling a financial gutter". penn bowl is now a vacant hole. it is located in the pennsville shopping center next to our also vacant movie theatre. my daughter wanted to go out and snag some quick photos and this was one of our stops. we tried the laundromat but as we set up (hanging out of the ghetto corolla) we got some looks of suspicion and annoyance. we will attempt again but from bikes. a parked car with lenses sticking out of the window looks bad. and the chances of having to answer questions to roving police is too high. i am quickly running out of local places to shoot that don't involve angry dogs and shotguns waved my way.

i applied an "aged photo" filter to the photo via lightroom to give it a bit more gloom.
day 110: "lawn care supply" - where the locals stop to get grass-cutting motivation juice. it is a local skill to push a mower with one hand and nurse a brew with the other (nawset gets credit for this trend!). for today's shot the boys and i rolled up, hopped out, anchored the tripod and took the shots. it was funny to hear the comments and see the expressions of folks at the stoplight musing at what or why were taking photos. best quote was from some tools in a mudder (truck with wheels the size of a small home): "check the dorks out!". maybe if my tripod had mudder wheels i could have bypassed dork status and shot straight to red neck status and got a "what's up, bro?"!
day 109: "abducted, abused and left alone". i spotted a lone shopping cart sitting in the depressing, vacant parking lot of merchant square off of governor prince blvd. in wilmington, delaware. there are no target stores near here along with no signs of life or hope. i liked how the 2-wheeled cart is symbolic of our economy and the current "solutions" being pushed on us to "get the economy moving". yep, 2-wheeled stimulus plan. my apologies for getting a little political with my shot today.
day 108: "the hills have eyes—south jersey". we drove to canton, nj to visit my brother and he took us on a quick tour down an isolated marsh-surrounded road. i loved the area as there are no wires or telephone polls. just a nuke cooling tower in the background... and a strange shack in the middle of the marsh... and NO cell reception... and, uh, it was kinda freaky actually. i hopped out of the van and ran half way up the planked entrance to take this shot ignoring the "no trespassing" sign and the full-on assault of green head flies. in mid-shot my brother beeped the horn and drove away leaving me. funny guy. he drove back. i may be heading back here to sneak closer next time. curiosity has me cranked to check out the shack.
day 107: "Relay for Life". due to a rain-out the event was hosted at the local middle school. one of the more touching scenes was the gym floor covered with candle filled bags with the names of local cancer victims. to see crying loved ones as they walked among the memorial bags was intense and difficult to witness.
day 106: Suicide is sad. David Carradine 1936--2009. i find it hard to believe that carradine committed suicide. only God truly knows what goes on in the deep recesses of our brains. i don't intend for today's photo to be disrespectful, harsh or cold. whenever i hear carradine's name i think of kung fu so i put a karate belt in the background (i KNOW kung fu is not karate) to associate martial arts to the photo. i wanted to use two items involving things you tie. our souls are ever so lightly tied to this earth. we are just blades of grass in a hot sun. enjoy the moments of life.
day 105: vacuums suck and so does my "shooting while driving" skills. on the way home from work i was driving behind a minivan with the license plate "KAL EL". yep, superman drives a minivan. but the shot was blurry due to shooting in low light while doing 80 mph. the state should take some of the cash they make off my speeding tickets and re-pave 295! i will post the minivan shot in the misc gallery later.
